Make Money tapping in to your Strengths

Caro Syson

How often do we spend time trying to learn, grow, or adapt to the things we hate doing, and become an expert (or at least competent) in the things that we’re not good at?

For some reason, we believe that we have to learn everything and spend time on lots of things that we don’t actually even like doing - like book-keeping in our business or writing marketing ads and content, but the reality is that we actually hate doing that side of things.

We tell ourselves that we have to spend time and effort getting to grips with the areas that don’t make our hearts sing, but we’re going to tell you a secret…..you don’t.

Play to your strengths

If you spend more time focusing on your strengths and playing to those, you’ll get further in life and in your business, than you would if you used that energy trying to level up your weaknesses, or trying to make your weaknesses better.

We’re all for personal growth here at Pocket PA, in both life and in business, and we’re all for overcoming issues and growing to be better. But we can’t be great at everything, and wouldn’t life be boring if we were all great at everything we do or have to do? Why not be exceptional at a few things that you love, rather than average at everything?

Focus on your strengths

Focusing on your strengths will help you to become exceptional within those strengths.

I love the saying ‘Be not afraid of the man who kicks one thousand times - but of the man who has one kick that he’s pacticed one thousand times!’

So you may need help with your bookkeeping or accounts, but your podcast is super successful because your strengths are talking or teaching. Or you may need help with organising your diary because your focus is much more on your hair cutting skills so you have a waiting list of clients as tall as the Eiffel Tower.  (Spoiler alert - we can help with both of those challenges by the way, but more on that later!)

Do you know what your talents are?

Ask yourself 3 quesstions

  1. What are your top skills?

  2. What are you most experienced in?

  3. What are your passions?

The answers to these questions will help you to see more clearly what areas to focus on.

You can also use your limitations to help you decide. Perhaps you don’t like writing, maybe you’re dyslexic and struggled with writing at school, so keeping a blog would be pointless for you. But you could set up a podcast, instead, and talk about what you love? Or focus on creating a Tik Tok account with videos of your creations? Ask yourself what are your limitations and how can you work around them.

Playing to your strengths while diving into your passions will help get you further than trying to do something you’re not good at.

Don’t let limitations stop you

Perhaps you’re great at cutting hair, or designing nails, or fixing plumbing, or training people to get fitter - but your weak areas are diary management, understanding your finances, or business admin. That shouldn’t stop you from setting up your own business and doing what you love each day.

There are things that can help you take the hassle out of the admin side. Pocket PA, for example, our software will take care of all of that for you, leaving you with more time to play to your strengths.

Do more of what lights you up

We all have things we’re great at, (and not so good at!) but doing more of what lights you up, will have such a great impact on your mental health and therefore also on your business. When you love what you do, more clients will be drawn to your glowing persona, and you’ll make more money.

Do more of what you’re aligned to do, and by aligned we mean the things that make your heart sing, the thing you do that makes time whizz by so fast you barely realise you’re working, not more of what you’re forced to do.

What comes naturally to you?

You don’t need to strive to be great at the things that don’t come naturally to you unless its a burning ambition that you crack it. Stay away from negativity as that won’t help you focus on your strengths.  Don’t beat yourself up for the things that you can’t do, and instead use that energy and focus on the things that you can do, and spend more time doing the things that come natrually to you.

If you play to your strengths you’ll find a way around the things you can’t do, and the way around will usually appear in the most unexpected way.

Are you a born leader? Can you set up something you can lead in? Can you create a group teaching your skills or knowledge?

Are you naturally creative? Can you create something that people can use, read, play, or sit with?

Do you like events or are you a great connector? Can you raise funding for yourself or for a charity?

Are you great at public speaking and were known as the class chatterbox at school? Look around and find some groups to speak at, colleges, schools, the local WI, or go bigger and go to festivals.

When you recognise what you are brilliant at and spend more time on that, you can excel in that area, and you’ll have fun doing it.

Ask yourself, what am I naturally great at and how do I utilise those skills? How much time do you spend doing the things you’re great at?

Stand in your power and lead from your talents.

There is a belief that you have to work hard if you want to be successful, but we believe that if you play to your strengths, you can create incredible results for yourself and have fun at the same time. And that is where your magic is at, that passion, that joy, that fun you have when paying to your strengths.

If you can focus on what you love and finding help with what you don’t enjoy so much, like using a smart tool for your business admin for example, you’ll improve the flow of money in your passions and stress less about the things you hate.
